Postgraduate Master of Radiology Programme
Programme Overview
The aim of the Malaysian postgraduate training programme in Radiology is two-fold; Firstly, to produce a radiologist who is able to provide safe and effective diagnostic support in the generality of the discipline on day 1 of their consultant practice and secondarily to enthusastically and urgently pursue the ongoing development of their knowledge and skills in sub specialty disciplines.
The Clinical Masters (Coursework and Dissertation) programme is offered by the department of Radiology. It is a four-year (8 semesters) programme. The maximum period allowed is 7 years (14 semesters). The coursework is conducted over the first 4 semesters, clinical apprenticeship through-out the 4 year programme and completion of dissertation in the last 4 semesters.
Entrance Requirements:
General:
- MD, MBBS, or MBChB from a recognised university by the Malaysian Medical Council.
- Two years of clinical experience after graduation.
- Registered with the Malaysian Medical Council
- Fulfil the entry requirements of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
- Passed Medex (Medical Specialist Pre-entrance Examination)

- Passed Radiology Entrance Exam (REE) and interview by Conjoint Board of Radiology
Additional requirements for international/overseas candidates
- Minimum of 7 IELTS or equivalent
- Minimum of 6 months radiology experience with letter of recommendation from the supervising radiologist from country of origin
- 3 – 6 months clinical attachment in Department of Radiology, UKM prior to Radiology Entrance Exam and Interview
- Fulfil all the required checklist before entering the programme

MedEx (Medical Specialist Pre-entrance Examination)
- Overview
1.1 MedEx is established by the Medical Deans Council of Malaysia as a uniform system of pre-entrance examinations, conducted jointly with the Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) which requires separate exam fee.
1.2 The date for MedEx normally around September – October every year and therefore you need to regularly check MedEx website: http://portal.mpm.edu.my/en/medex
- Examination structure
2.1 The entrance examination consists of 50 multiple choice questions with minus marking within the question. The minimum score per question is 0 mark. The maximum score per question is 5 marks.
2.2 The duration of the examination is 2 hours.

Radiology Entrance Exam (REE)
- Examination structure
1.1 The Radiology Entrance Exam consists of 2 components which are OSCE and Rapid Film Reporting which will be sit by the candidates at the same time ie consecutively. Syllabus that will be covered for the exam is basic radiological anatomy and technique as well as emergency radiology radiographs. Both exams will be done on the same day for every candidate.
1.2 Venue. The examination is held at different venue based on the host for the year which will be rotated among the members of Conjoint Board of Radiology. That means it can be held in Kuala Lumpur (UKM or UM or UPM), Kelantan (USM), Pahang (UIA) or Negeri Sembilan (KPJUC). - OSCE
2.1. OSCE stands for Objective Structured Clinical Exam which consists of anatomy image viewing module comprises of 20 questions of different body systems and radiological technique. Each question will have minimum of 1 image with labels for candidates to identify the correct radiological anatomical structures. The images will be projected digitally in power-point format.
2.2. Candidates have to write the answer each question in a given answer set using pen. Each question will carry maximum of 5 marks.
2.3. Candidates are given 1 hour to answer the whole question. - Rapid Film Reporting
3.1. Rapid Film Reporting consists of 25 questions of plain radiographs of mixed normal and abnormal cases. Most of the cases are cases that are frequently encountered in reporting of emergency pile cases.
3.2. Candidates are required to identify each question whether the case is normal or abnormal and write the answer in a given answer sheet. For each abnormal answer, candidate has to give the diagnosis. Each answer carries 1 mark (Normal case: 1 mark; Abnormal case: 0.5 mark for abnormal remark and 0.5 mark for the diagnosis).
3.3. Candidates are given 30 minutes to answer the whole question.
Radiology Entrance Interview
Interview is the last entrance process for Master of Radiology programme which will be held around December-January each year, organized by the Conjoint Board of Radiology. Candidates who has passed Medex exam will be called to radiology entrance exam and interview. The interview will take place after the Radiology Entrance Exam in the same venue as the Radiology Entrance Exam of that year, which will be informed to candidate via email. Medex and Radiology Entrance Exam are done prior to interview to screen successful candidates and will also be counted for student selection at the end of the interview.

- Is MedEx exam and radiology entrance exam two different exams?
Yes, MedEx and radiology entrance exam are two different exams. MedEx (Medical Specialist Pre-entrance Examination) is established by the Medical Deans Council of Malaysia as a uniform system of pre-entrance examinations, conducted jointly with the Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) which requires separate exam fee. Radiology entrance exam (REE) and interview will be organized by the Conjoint Board of Radiology which normally happens after MedEx since the candidates for REE are shortlisted from those who passed MedEx exam. REE will be done at the same time of interview most of the time, 1-2 days before the interview. It normally happen around December – January once a year. There will be no exam fee for this exam at this point of time. - Can I sit for radiology entrance exam / Medex exam before completion of clinical attachment? (Applicable for international candidates)
Yes, you can sit for the exam before or while doing the clinical attachment.
Clinical attachment is not a guarantee to enter Master of Radiology programme, you still need to fulfil the required checklist for admission of international candidates. - Do i need to clear the exams before the interview?
Yes, you need to pass the exam (both MedEx and REE) before you will be called for interview. In other word, you are not eligible to be called for interview without passing the two exams.
