Background

The Southeast Asia Regional Climate Downscaling (SEACLID) is an APN funded project of the Southeast Asia Regional Climate Initiative (SEARCI).  Officially established in November 2013, the SEACLID project was later streamlined into the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP)’s Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) as one of the three CORDEX domains in Asia and became the fourteenth domain of CORDEX, and subsequently renamed as SEACLID / CORDEX Southeast Asia. SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia aims to downscale several GCMs using a number RCMs at 25 km x 25 km resolution to address the urgent needs for high-resolution regional future climate change scenarios for the Southeast Asia region and establish a regional climate change data center for efficient data dissemination. The SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia was joined by 20 institutions from 14 countries. Further details of the project can be viewed at http://www.ukm.edu.my/seaclid-cordex. As an extension to this project, another related APN funded project was established in 2017 with the aim to produce a much higher resolution climate change scenario at 5 km x 5 km over a number of selected sub-domains over the Southeast Asia. For convenience, we referred the former and the latter as the first and the second phase of SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia.

The first phase of SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia is nearing its completion and will officially end on June 22, 2018. As a final activity, a workshop to discuss the overall achievements of the project and outreach the key findings will be held in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia.  This workshop will also be organized back-to-back with the second workshop of the second phase of SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia, to provide a platform for members to discuss and exchange technical aspects related to the 5 km x 5 km simulations. This workshop is jointly organized by the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the Ramkhamhaeng University Center of Regional Climate Change and Renewable Energy (RU-CORE), Bangkok, Thailand. The venue of the workshop will be at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia while hotel accommodation will be either on-campus UKM Puri Pujjanga Hotel or other nearby hotels. SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia project members and students involved in the project are invited and encouraged to participate and present their scientific findings at this workshop. We also encourage scientists who carried out regional climate downscaling and related works in the region to present their findings at this workshop. We also encourage local participants (academia, policymakers, government officers, NGOs, students) to attend as well.

For participants who would be attending with own funding, Registration Fee (For overseas participants: USD150 for normal participants and USD100 for students, Local participants: RM500 for normal participants and RM350 for students) will be imposed. The fee will have to be paid by cash during the registration. The fee covers lunches, coffee breaks, workshop materials, one conference dinner and transportation from hotel to the workshop venue. Objectives:

The objectives of the workshop are:

• To discuss the overall achievements of the first phase of the SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia project
• To present the latest analysis results of the 25 km x 25 km multi-model simulations over the CORDEX Southeast Asia Domain
• To provide a platform for scientists who carried out similar regional climate over the Southeast Asia region to share and compare their results with those of SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia
• To launch the Southeast Asia Regional Climate Change Information System (SARCCIS), a regional climate change data portal established under this project
• To disseminate key findings of SEACLID/CORDEX Southeast Asia and future regional climate change information based on high-resolution and multi-model simulations carried out in this project
• To discuss the current progress and exchange findings on the 5 km x 5 km multi-model simulations over a number of sub-domains and to discuss and further coordinate efforts on the 5 km x 5 km simulations
