SEADPRI Technical Talk 1/2012
Date : 30 Jan 2012
Time : 9.30am – 10.30am
Venue : SEADPRI-UKM Seminar Room, Level 6
Technical Talk:
- Shallow landslides, soil production, and sediment yield in mountainous watersheds: Multi-approach for comprehensive understanding of hillslope denudation processes with varying time-scales
- Landslide investigation and prevention measures in Japan
Speakers:
- Yuki Matsushi, PhD (Geomorphology)
- Sumio Matsuura, PhD (Professor of Slope Conservation Section)
Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University
Summary:
Dr. Yuki Matsushi will introduce his researches in Japanese mountains about mechanisms of rainfall-induced shallow landslides, rates of soil production on hillslopes, and resulting sediment yield from watersheds. Hydrological monitoring in the field revealed the short-term (triggering) groundwater behavior leading to landsliding, while cosmogenic nuclide analysis by accelerator mass spectrometry enabled us to quantify long-term (preceding) accumulation of soil that becomes potential sliding material on hillslopes. Results of these studies enhanced the needs of combination of geotechnical and geomorphological standpoints for better evaluation of potential of sediment yield from a mountainous watershed.
Prof. Sumio Matsuura will speak about the general investigation procedures in an attempt to understand the mechanisms of landslide and landslide prevention measures that have been developed in Japan.
