The Glorious 10 YearsÂ
Fuel Cell Institute (SELFUEL) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was established in July 2006 and is the only institute in Malaysia undertaking major research in the field of fuel cells and hydrogen energy. On January 1, 2007, Prof Ir. Dr. Wan Ramli Wan Daud was officially appointed Director of SELFUEL by UKM Vice-Chancellor, YBhg. Prof. Tan Sri Dato ‘Wira Dr. Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hassan Shahbudin. In 2014, Prof. Dr. Abu Bakar Mohamad was appointed a new director and subsequently in 2017 to date, SELFUEL’s directorship position was held by Prof. Ir. Dr. Kamarudin kartom. The fuel cell technology is developed to solve the energy crisis problem faced by the world. This technology is also capable of reducing pollution and greenhouse gases in the world. This fuel cell works when the redox reaction converts chemical energy into electricity through electrochemical principles. This process does not involve the combustion process whereas the waste is heat and water. Although SELFUEL was officially established in 2006, but UKM fuel cell research has been around for about 20 years. The success achieved by SELFUEL is extremely commendable when SELFUEL is involved with various international-class activities, and has produced several prototypes besides being active in research and publication of high-impact journals.
