Programme Name: FELLOWSHIP IN COLORECTAL SURGERY (UKM)

Training Centre: UKM Medical Centre/ Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, Cheras 56000 Kuala Lumpur

Objective: 

Medicine has undergone several important evolutions. The technology advance has very much changed the disease treatment.

This paperwork is provided  as a guide to assess competencies of trainee Colorectal Surgeons in UKM.

The assessment is based on Core Competencies elements which are required of any trainee surgeons outlined by The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) adjusted accordingly to suit the field of Colorectal Surgery.

Core Competencies

1. Patient Care

Upon completion, trainees must be able to:

1. provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems in Colorectal Surgery and the promotion of health.
   1. Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients and their family members
   1. Use the latest medical information to effectively formulate and implement patients’ management plan.
   1. Competently interpret diagnostic information and perform all diagnostic or therapeutic procedures essential for patient care.
   1. Collaborate with other health care professionals to deliver excellent patient care.

• Medical Knowledge

Trainees must demonstrate:

1. knowledge about evolving biomedical, clinical and cognate sciences and the application of these knowledge to patient care
   1. the understanding and application of basic and clinical sciences that are necessary for practice in the appropriate discipline.

• Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

Trainees must demonstrate the ability to:

1. systematically appraise and analyse one’s clinical practice and practice based outcome.
   1. apply outcome practice and outcome information for improvement of patient care
   1. understand the basic of statistical methodology and its application for the appraisal of clinical studies.
   1. Apply information technology tools for efficient management of patient information, support of  clinical care and patient education.

• Inter-professional and Communication Skills     

Trainees  must be able to:

1. demonstrate interpersonal communication skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with patients, patients families and professional colleagues
   1. lead a medical team that may consist of consultants and allied health care professionals.
   1. Effectively elicit patient interaction and participation in their care through non-verbal communication skills.
   1. Create a skill set that allow the trainees to sustain a healthy doctor-patient relationship based on trust and integrity.

• Professionalism

Trainees must demonstrate:

1. commitment to carrying out professional responsibility, adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to a diverse patient population.
   1. The principles that are inherent for practice as a surgeon such as integrity, respect, and responsiveness to patient care and society that may supersede self-interest.
   1. Willingness to act responsibly with a commitment to excellent patient care.
   1. The understanding and practice the ethical obligations for patient confidentiality.
   1. The awareness of a possible patient culture difference and be sensitive and respectful of these difference.

• System-based practice

Trainees must demonstrate:

1. the awareness and responsiveness to the larger context of available health system and resources.
   1. The understanding that each individual medical or surgical practice is a component of the entire health care system of Malaysia that each of them contribute to the impact of overall delivery and access of health care.
   1. The practice of cost-efficient health care so that resources may be properly allocated and health-care cost controlled.
   1. The ability to recommend improvement in health care delivery, quality health care and patients access to the system.
   1. The ability to develop partnership with health care organization and providers in order to improve health care access, delivery and cost-control.

Exit of training examination/interview

1. The trainer will form a team of examiners to conduct the examination/interview.
2. Exam/assesment viva schedule will be planned by the trainer according to suitable convenient timing.
3. Components of items examined are:
   1. Supervisors reports/written report throughout the entire training period.
   1. Log book report which had been signed and approved by all supervisors
   1. Viva session on minimum of 1 research projects or publications on Colorectal Surgery topics.
   1. Viva session on Operative surgery in Colorectal.
   1. Viva session in Principles of Management of Colorectal diseases (2 examiners) which will include radiological, laboratory, basic investigational knowledge and collaborative work with professional colleagues. The subject discussed must be based on the provided training program curriculum
4. At the completion of the examination, the candidate will be given a certificate of training completion by UKM.
