Assoc. Prof. Dr Yazmin Yaacob
Associate Professor Dr Yazmin Yaacob likes to be known as an enthusiastic, engaging and supportive teacher to her fellows and students. Each case encountered, there is a point to learn. She is the current head of unit in Pusat Intervensi UKM (Interventional Radiology unit).
She obtained her medical degree from University of Otago, New Zealand. The experience in New Zealand shapes her outlook in how she tackles medical education. Her intention to be a surgeon changed, after experiencing interventional radiology during her medical officer days. The image-guided procedure without any scalpel fascinates her. With that she obtained her Masters of Medicine in Radiology from UKM. She pursued her Clinical Fellowship in Interventional Radiology in UKM under Professor Ahmad Sobri Muda. In addition she was part of liver transplant team attachment in Queen’s Mary Hospital, Hong Kong.
With more than 10 years’ experience in interventional radiology in Pusat Intervensi UKM, she and Prof Rozman have received fellows from local universities, Indonesia, Yemen and Egypt.
Pusat Intervensi UKM has two interventional suites with one being a hybrid theatre, one small daycare and a clinic. The centre has an average of more than 2000 cases per year, Assoc. Prof Yazmin also has published numerous publications and speaker engagements at national and Asia Pacific conferences in peripheral interventions and interventional oncology. She is the committee for MYSIR (Malaysian Society of Interventional Radiology) and had been an organizing chairman for the national IR conference. She also held various industry related IR workshops with national and international participants.She is the first IR to use Therasphere, radioembolization in Malaysia. She also has the opportunity do live cases with Interventional oncology greats such Shiro Miyayama, Shinichi Hori and Simon Yu. She has experience on many transarterial treatments in oncology from lipiodol-ethanol, drug-eluting beads and radioembolization. She also has experiences with many kinds of ablation technique from RFA, microwave and cryoablation.
In peripheral intervention, she has a lot of expertise in vascular access and venoplasty. Pusat Intervensi UKM is a high case-based center for difficult venous access and challenging venoplasties. From here, she has presented in national level on her techniques and experience. Pusat Intervensi UKM and Vascular surgical unit also collaborates in lower limb and aortic interventions. All in all, Pusat Intervensi UKM has a variety of cases from head to toe and she promises great exposure and learning experiences.
