Introduction

The National University of Malaysia (UKM), founded in 1971, is a leading public university situated in Bangi, Malaysia. Known for its commitment to high quality education and research, UKM is a preferred institution for both domestic and international students. The university offers a broad spectrum of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across its 13 faculties, 13 institutes, and 10 residential colleges.

In the 2025 QS World University Rankings, UKM achieved a global ranking of 138th, a noteworthy improvement from its 159th position in 2024, marking its second-highest ranking since 2013. Additionally, it holds the 33rd spot in the QS Asia University Rankings, reinforcing its status as one of the premier universities in the region.

Pusat Pesisir UKM Indonesia aims to broaden access to higher education in Indonesia and strategically increase the number of international students through collaboration with public and private universities in Malaysia. The center will offer a range of programs, including Collaborative Dual, Join or Double university programs, Exclusive UKM postgraduate programs, Microcredential courses, and Professional certificates.

International Candidate

  1. Complete 12 years of Primary and High School education; and
  2. Obtain High School Certificate (e.g. Higher Secondary Certificate, Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate, Tawjihiyah, Ijazah Sekolah Menengah Atas, High School Diploma); and
  3. Meet the minimum English requirement set by faculty; and
  4. Pass UKM interview (if required); and
  5. Meet the faculty specific requirements;

a. A person who intends to apply for a master’s programme should have the following qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree by obtaining a good Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or having accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or institution who has accreditation as prescribed by a programme;
  2. Doctor of Medicine degree or Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University or any institution of higher learning or an equivalent degree from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the Senate;
  3. Any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL);
  4. Fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable); and
  5. Fulfils requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA);
  6. Obtained APEL certification for master (Level 7).

a. A person who intends to apply for a doctoral programme should have the following qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or have accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or an institution with accreditation as prescribed by a programme;
  2. Other qualifications equivalent to a masters degree or other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or
  3. A student currently pursuing full-time master’s programme under sub regulation 6( a) at the University and recommended by the Faculty’s/Institute’s Graduate Studies Committee for status conversion to a doctoral programme with approval from the Dean/Director; or
  4. Bachelor Degree with distinction from the University or any institution of higher learning subject to what is prescribed by the Faculty/Institute and approval by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA); and/or with accreditation recognised by a foreign Accreditation Board.
  5. Any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or
  6. Fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable); and
  7. Obtained APEL certification for doctoral (Level 8).

English Language Proficiency Requirement

  1. International students shall fulfil the English language requirements by obtaining IELTS or TOEFL or MUET results or any examination that has been aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) that fulfils the minimum score or band requirements set by their respective programs and approved by the Senate.

  2. An international student who fails to meet the English language competency requirements may be given a conditional offer as follows:
    1. Students are allowed to attend an internal English Preparatory Course at the University with a time limit of a maximum of two (2) years and subject to the regulations of the Malaysian Immigration Department in force; and
    2. International students pursuing an internal English Preparatory Course must sit for the IELTS or TOEFL or MUET examinations or any CEFR-aligned examination to meet the English language competency requirements.

  3. The list of examination which has been aligned to CEFR is subject to the list approved by the Senate from time to time.

  4. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemptions to the conditions stated in sub-regulations 5(1) and 5(2) to:
    1. International students originating from countries that use English as the official language; or
    2. International students who use academic qualifications from institutions that use English as the medium of instruction and intend to pursue higher studies at the University.
