MASTER OF EDUCATION (GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING)​

The aims of this specialization are to ensure students:

    1. To produce professionals who could provide counseling services in schools, families and other institutions.
    2. To provide in-depth knowledge on theories in counseling.
    3. To impart skills in counseling.
    4. To develop students’ scientific attitude and professionalism to enable them to carry out guidance and counseling tasks effectively.

    1. Possess a Bachelor in Education with Honours from UKM or Bachelor in Education with Honours from other institute of higher learning recognised by the Senate; OR
    2. Possess a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours from UKM or Bachelor Degree from any institute of higher learning recognised by the Senate; OR
    3. Possess a qualifications and requirements equivalent with the qualifications recognised by the Senate; AND
    1. For international candidates, requirements for English Language is minimum 550 (TOEFL) or 6.5 (IELTS).

    1. Students who undergo a practicum will be at the chosen setting for 14 weeks on a full-time basis and 23 weeks on a part time basis. It must be an on-going practicum. Students are required to carry out activities/tasks during the course of the practicum such as:
      • To carry out recorded individual and group counseling sessions for supervision purposes.
      • To carry out individual and group guidance activities
      • To prepare daily activity journals and fill up the weekly report form
      • To carry out a research project
    1. Trainees who undergo the practicum are governed by rules and regulations in practical training ethics/practicum/Education Faculty teaching.
    2. Students will be guided and supervised by supervisors appointed by the Faculty of Education
    3. The recordings of counseling sessions will be scrutinized and discussed between student and supervisor for guidance and supervision purposes.
    4. Evaluation is carried out on the following activities:
      • A total of at least 20 recorded sessions of individual and group counseling session.
      • A research report of between 10,000 and 14,000 words.
    1. Supervision and practicum evaluation will be done by appointed supervisors
    2. Grading will be given based on the research report and daily and weekly journal submitted to the supervisor.
