Background

The Sustainability Challenge 2019 (SC 2019) is the third series of the competition that was initiated by UKM-YSD Chair for Sustainable Development: Zero Waste Technology with the objective of exploring and developing innovative ideas on sustainability of commodity crops industry. The previous competitions were held successfully on November 18, 2015 and November 29, 2017.

For the third challenge this year, the format has been changed completely compared to first two series. Instead of just selecting the top 10 ideas, for Sustainability Challenge 2019: Innovation and Invention Competition, all participants will be invited to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia to present their ideas in front of the juries. The top 10 ideas and innovations will be selected to pitch their ideas in front of the Grand Jury. The top 3 winners will receive cash prizes awards. All participants will also be considered for the Gold, Silver and Bronze Sustainability Challenge 2019 medals.

Theme

Commodity Crops: Innovation towards Sustainability and Circular Economy

Objectives

The competition aims to:

  1. To explore and develop innovative ideas and invention on the sustainability of commodity crops industry among students.
  2. To provide a platform for initiatives on commodity crops sustainability practices towards circular economy reflecting on SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
  3. To initiate initiatives on how industry can benefit the communities
Term & Condition
  1. Entry is open to all students from institutions/ matriculations/ foundations/ polytechnics/ universities/ colleges by individual or group (maximum three persons) in Malaysia and worldwide .
  2. Competition fee will be based on per entry.
  3. Only ONE certificate of participation will be issued.
  4. Idea shall be original and the idea can be an outcome of a PhD, Master, Undergraduate Final Year Project or research work. Collaborative research projects with industry partners are highly encouraged.
  5. Judging process will be based on video submission and poster presentation. Top 10 teams will be invited to pitch (5 minutes) their ideas in front of the Grand Jury who will choose the winners for the Grand Prizes.
  6. The organizer and/or panel of judges reserve the rights to alter competition terms and conditions which deemed necessary, in the best interest of this competition.


Guideline

Video Submission

Each team is asked to submit a 3-minute video presentation of their ideas by uploading into the Youtube channel.

  1. Video should be submitted in MP4 format
  2. The link to the video should be provided during the registration or 1 month prior to the event.
  3. The best video will receive a special award.

  

Presentation during Event

  1. Each participant will be provided with a limited exhibition space (table and poster board).
  2. Participants are advised to stand by or present at respective booths throughout the event
  3. It is compulsory to prepare a poster presentation. See details on poster preparation guidelines.
  4. Participants are also encourage to display a model, prototype, sample or laptop presentation related to the idea. This will help the panel or judges to understand the research project better. Participants may also prepare brochure, pictures, etc.
  5. The panel or judges will select the teams to be awarded with Gold/Silver/Bronze medals.
  6. All teams will be pitched (5 minute pitching) their ideas in front of the Grand Jury. The Grand Jury will choose the top three winners.

Poster Preparation Guidelines

Poster size is A1 (and hang type). Printing of poster will be at your own cost.

The poster must include:

  1. Title
  2. Introduction
  3. Names of project members
  4. Name of institution/faculty/centre/department, etc
  5. Introduction
  6. Problem Statement
  7. Objectives
  8. Novelty
  9. Usefulness
  10. Commercialization potential or impact towards socioeconomic
  11. Pictures
  12. References

Accommodation and travel costs are not included in the registration fee. The registration only covers participation in the competition and food voucher for the registered team members (maximum 3 persons per team per fee).
