World Obesity Day 2025

Happy World Obesity Day | March 4, 2025

Did you know? Obesity is on the rise in Malaysia! The NHMS 2023 reports that 54.5% of adults have abdominal obesity, influenced by diet, lifestyle, and genetics.

At UMBI, we are committed to obesity research & intervention to drive impactful change. Here’s what we’re doing:

✅ Advanced Body Composition Research
In collaboration with University of Oxford, UK, we use DXA imaging, a more precise method than BMI & WHR to study obesity under the MyPAIR UK-MY Joint Partnership on NCDs.

Read our latest findings:
🔗 Lipids as Key Biomarkers in Obesity-Related Metabolic Dysregulation
🔗 Body Fat Distribution & Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Women
🔗 Body Composition & Cardiovascular Risk in Multi-Ethnic Populations

✅ Obesity Intervention Studies
Through the Komuniti@UniMADANI Grant (MOF, Malaysia), we explore diet, physical activity, and drug treatments to combat obesity.

✅ Genetics of Obesity
Our pilot Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS), funded by UKM DIP Grant, aims to uncover genetic factors contributing to obesity.

✅ Take Control of Your Health with DEXA
Track your fat mass, muscle mass, & bone density with our DEXA (Bone & Body Composition Analysis)—a non-invasive and accurate method for assessing obesity risk.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our funders, including the Ministry of Finance (MOF) Malaysia, UKM DIP Grant, and MyPAIR UK-MY Joint Partnership on NCDs, for their invaluable support in advancing obesity research and interventions.

👏 A special thanks to our dedicated UMBI team and staff for their commitment.

Let’s take action for a healthier future! 💙
