UMBI Webinar on “Precision Medicine in Malaysia: Ready for PRIME Time”
On 23th September 2020, at 4.00 p.m. GMT+8, webinar on “Precision Medicine in Malaysia: Ready for PRIME Time” was organized by the UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute – UMBI , UKM and University of Dundee, UK. This is in conjunction with the launching of PRIME project, a joint effort between Malaysia UMBI, UKM and University of Dundee.This was the first for this joint effort and the public reaction is encouraging. About 220 participants have registered for the webinar on Zoom, and until 29th September 2020, the UMBI FB (https://www.facebook.com/
umbi.ukm/) streaming has accumulated more than 600 views. The PRIME project aimed to investigate diabetes and its cardiovascular complications in Asians, as the majority of knowledge on this topic has been accumulated from studying white populations from the Western European ancestry. This project hopes to identify genetic markers that enable the development of population-based screening to identify individuals at most risk of developing type II diabetes, thus enabling tailor treatment strategies for patients. The webinar covers a wide range of topics on precision medicine which includes the conditions of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes in Malaysia, diabetes and genomics, retinal analysis of diabetics, as well as the association of retinal changes and its risk of developing CVD. The webinar ended with an actively-participated Question & Answer session and ended at 6.00 p.m. GMT+8
