Abstract
The
activities of 210Pb was measured to establish the sediment
accumulation rates and mixing layer at four studies location (river, estuary
and ocean) in the coastal water of Kuala Selangor on February 2, 2005. Sediment
cores were collected using a gravity core, which the core sample were taken by
inserting a PVC plastic pipe enclosed in a cast-iron tube and it pushed manually
as far down as possible. Sediment cores were cut at 3 cm interval for each
layer. About 1 ml of 1000 ppm Be, 1 ml of 20 mg/ml PbN03 and 1 ml of
25 mg/ml FeCl3 were spiked
into 1-2 g of dried homogenized sediment and continue purify with the cation
resin column. The precipitation of 21OPb
was counted using the alpha-beta spectrometry at Malaysian Institute Nuclear
for Technology. Sedimentation and mixing rates were ranged from 0.10
cm/yr to 0.2 cm/yr and 0.338 cm2/yr to 2.267 cm2/yr, respectively. The
thicknes s of mixing layer at locations ranged from surface to 20 cm depth.
