Sustainable Water Management (SWM2010)

15-17 September, Jamshor0, Pakistan

A successful Sustainable Water Management (SWM2010) conference was held on 15-17 September in Jamshoro, Pakistan. This conference achieved its objectives; discussing opportunities and challenges for integrated and sustainable water management and implementation potential of innovative resource-efficient, robust solutions for developing and transition countries. In addition, the conference highlighted some other aspects such as: to facilitate information exchange and networking between researchers from the developed, transition and developing countries and explore new research frontiers. The conference had research papers from many different countries such as, Australia, Brazil, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Malawi, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Palestine and the UK.

After the conference, MUWAREC representatives from Islamic countries had a meeting to discuss progress and planning for the future. Professor Bhanger from MUWAREC Pakistan, the host country, welcomed all members and explained the purpose of the meeting. The  Malaysian representative Dato Ahmad Fuad gave a brief background of MUWAREC and suggested that research collaboration focus on a few key areas, just to get the initiative started. For example, from the conference it was clear that there is a lot of research ongoing in several countries on ‘Reuse of greywater’ and ‘Treatment of wastewater from cottage textile industry using dyes’. Collaboration in these areas among the researchers clearly would benefit applications on-the-ground in the individual countries concerned, like what applications have been successful and why. Discussions were lively with delegates from Egypt, Indonesia, Palestine and Bangladesh giving contributions.

The major outcome from this meeting was that delegates agreed for MUWAREC to join in with the biennial SWM conferences; the next one scheduled in 2012 in Oman. The second outcome is the involvement of new Muslim countries to MUWAREC, Palestine, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
