PROF. DR. SABIRIN JAA’FAR
Prof. Dr. Sabirin Ja’afar graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons) from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 1987. He joined the Malaysian Judicial and Legal Service in the same year as a Magistrate. He later served as Senior Assistant Registrar, Deputy Registrar of High Court in Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown and Head, Research Division of the Federal Court of Malaysia before appointed a Sessions Court Judge, Kuala Lumpur. He also served under the Attorney General’s Chambers as Deputy Public Prosecutor for Kuala Lumpur, Senior Federal Counsel (International and Advisory Division), Legal Advisor for the Ministry of Defence and Director of Legal and Investigations of Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). He was seconded to the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Authority (MTJA) as its Legal and Administration Manager before opting for early retirement in 2011.
Dr. Sabirin was called to the Malaysian Bar as an Advocate & Solicitor, High Court of Malaya in July 1996.
In September 1996 he pursued his masters in maritime law in Cardiff, Wales and in 2002 he won the prestigious Chevening Scholarship from the British Government to pursue his Ph.D in maritime studies at Greenwich Maritime Institute, London. While in London, he was attached to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an intern.
Dr. Sabirin is currently Professor of Business Law and Ethics in the International Business School (IBS), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur.
During his student days Dr. Sabirin was an active student and had participated in students union i.e. PKPIM and had written articles in newspapers and had also won a number of writing competitions at national and regional level.
He is active in the IIUM alumni activities and was elected as President, Persatuan Alumni UIAM for two terms sessions 2000-2004.
