Safeguarding Nature, Empowering Communities: Building Sustainable Tourism Via the UNESCO Global Geoparks Model was the title of 9th Geoheritage and Geopark Virtual Forum. This virtual forum is co-inside with the COP 29, hosted by Geopark research Center with Ampang Jaya Rimba, Institute of Geology Malaysia, Langkawi research Center and Geological Heritage Group of Malaysia. Moderated by Assoc Prof Dr. Sharina Abdul Halim, the Deputy Director of LESTARI, UKM, this virtual forum explores the fact that ssustainable tourism with geopark cannot exist without the inclusion and empowerment of the communities who are inherently connected to the land. With understanding that in Geoparks, these communities, acting as stewards of the environment, possess deep knowledge of the land and play a critical role in protecting natural and cultural heritage. The sharing of knowledge and practice of sustainable tourism was by expert from Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brazil lead by Prof Rajiv Shaw of Graduate School of Media and Governance in Keio University, Japan, Mr Irshad Mobarak from The Datai, Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark. Dr Yunus Kusumahbrata a representative of Geopark National Committee of Indonesia and Mr. Silas Samuel dos Santos a geologist from Seridó Geopark Team, Brazil. More than 150 participants have been joining this virtual forum from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Brazil, Hong Kong, Philippines, Myanmar, Tanzania, Thailand, Japan, Laos and Morocco. The sharing of practices and approaches in safeguarding their natural and cultural heritage through the partnership among the local communities and various entities within the geopark have concretize the significant roles of community in implementing conservation is the development. The 8th Geoheritage and Geopark Virtual Forum delve on the topic of geopark and School: best practices from Asia Pacific Geopark. This session is a collaborative partnership of Geopark Research Centre LESTARI, with Institute of Geology Malaysia, Langkawi research Centre, and Geological Heritage Group of Malaysia. The two hours session was filled with practical and insightful sharing by the practice from Malaysia, China and Korea geopark, represented by manager of Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, Dr. Azmil Munif Mohd Bukhari, Geoscientist of Yanqing UNESCO Global Geopark, Mr Lu Zhanqian and Ms Ju Seong Ok, the Geoscientist of Cheongsong UNESCO Global Geopark. The virtual forum has attracted 207 participants online from participants from Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Korea, China, Phillipines and Bangladesh, representing by government agencies, higher institutions, education, local communities, from various industries include quarrying, mining, oil and gas industries, tourism and even town planning. Moderated by Associate Prof Dr. Sharina Abdul Halim, Deputy Director of LESTARI as well as the Head of Culture Heritage Program at Geopark Research centre, concluded that the geopark school is crucial as part of geopark development by imparting the sense of responsibility and self-belonging toward their environment and heritage. School that nurture next generation leader within the geopark will secure the conservation of their natural and cultural heritage. JMG Johor telah dijemput dalam program perkongsian ilmu berkenaan pemeliharaan dan pemuliharaan warisan geologi pantai Tg Balau.
Tapak geologi Tg Balau ini penting kerana ia dalam proses untuk diwartakan sebagai salah satu warisan kebangsaan di bawah Akta Warisan Negara 2005. Pantai ini menyimpan rahsia sejarah pembentukan bumi dan daya (force) yang bertindak ke atas batuan di sini sejak jutaan tahun yang lalu. Kami berusaha untuk menyemai rasa cinta dan kesedaran kepada mereka dan orang awam agar warisan ini dihargai nilai dan keunikannya dan bersedia pula untuk memeliharanya agar dapat dinikmati keindahannya untuk generasi pewaris akan datang.

The 7th Malaysia Geoheritage Conference is a biannual conference that gathers all researcher, policy maker and implementer who involve in the conservation of geoheritage in Malaysia. The conference is a venue for sharing as well as gaining knowledge in conserving, protecting and managing geoheritage. This year the conference co-insides with the 4th Joint Malaysia-Indonesia Geoheritage Conference which is a regional movement of geoheritage conservation.
