SUMMARY OF THE LECTURE

This lecture will begin by explaining the background leading to the separation of Singapore from Malaysia in 1965. It then focuses on the latest state of affairs concerning the supply of water to Singapore; the status of the 2008 ICJ decisions relating to Pedra Branca (Batu Puteh); the Malayan Railway land in Singapore, the crooked bridge to replace the causeway; the land reclamation by Singapore in the Straits of Johor; the defence of Singapore; the end of the Lee Kuan Yew era; and the prospects for Next Fifty Years in Malaysia-Singapore relations.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE SPEAKER

Tan Sri Ab. Kadir Mohamad graduated with a B.A Hons. in Political Science degree from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia in 1968. He spent 45 years in the service of the Government of Malaysia, including as Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1996-2001) and Adviser for Foreign Affairs to the Prime Minister of Malaysia (2003-2009). He has documented his intimate knowledge of issues affecting Malaysia-Singapore relations in a book published in January 2015, entitled “Malaysia-Singapore Fifty Years of Contentions 1965-2015”.
