ABSTRAK
Penentuan kualiti air berdasarkan Indeks Kualiti Air-labatan Alam Sekitar (IKA) telah dilakukan di lembangan Sungai Ibai, Terengganu dari bulan Ogos hingga Disember 2003. Pensampelan telah dilakukan sebanyak empat kali di enam stesen pensampelan. Parameter-parameter yang diukur ialah pH, oksigen terlarut, permintaan oksigen biokimia, pemlintaan oksigen kimia, jumlah pepejal terampai dan ammonia. Keputusan daripada kajian mendapati purata nilai IKA di setiap stesen pensampelan berjulat diantara 65.0-85.4% dengan stesen yang terletak di hulu lembangan sungai menunjukkan kualiti air yang lebih baik berbanding dengan stesen di hilir lembangan sungai. Secara keseluruhannya, nilai purata IKA untuk lembangan Sungai Ibai ialah 74.4% iaitu dalam status sedikit tercemar. Data yang diperolehi juga dibandingkan dengan pengelasan berdasarkan Piawai Interim Kualiti Air Kebangsaan (INWQS) untuk Malaysia.

ABSTRACT
Water quality determination based on Water Quality Index-Department of Environment (WQI) has been carried out at Ibai River basin, Terengganu from August until December 2003. Samplings have been carried out four times at six sampling stations. Parameters measured were pH, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids and ammonia. Results from the study showed that the average values of WQI at each sampling station were in the range of 65.0-85.4% with the upstream stations showed better water quality compared to the downstream stations. Overall, the average value of WQI for Ibai River basin was 74.4% with the status of slightly polluted. Data obtained were also compared with the classification based on Interim National Water Quality Standards (INWQS) for Malaysia.
