Kota Kinabalu can be accessed through three different routes depending on the visitors' origin. Options include flights, ferries and land vehicles. However, travelling by air is the most popular way for international tourists.
Most planes would land in the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) which is the main gateway to Sabah. It is situated 20 minutes away from the city and manages many flights.

Sabah has a second airport called the Low Cost Carrier Terminal or Terminal Two which is situated 7 km from KKIA. It is operated by AirAsia.
Visitors from Labuan, Indonesia and Philippines travelling by sea can arrive at Kota Kinabalu terminals. Foreign guests travelling in their yachts can berth at the Sutera Harbour Marina in Kota Kinabalu but require to do port clearance before their crew is allowed ashore.
Visitors from Kuching and Brunei Darussalam may reach Kota Kinabalu via the Trans Borneo Highway. However, these visitors are advised to be prepared for long journeys.
